Ethereum Foundation Sets Protocol Priorities Through 2029

The Ethereum Foundation Protocol cluster published its current and emerging priorities on September 7, 2026, setting out a framework for protocol work through 2029.

A central long-term target is post-quantum resistance for Ethereum’s layer 1 across its execution, consensus and data layers by December 2029.

The priorities also cover the upcoming Hegotá fork and a set of research efforts expected to span multiple forks. The publication identifies five such arcs: fast finality, post-quantum security, privacy, state and zkEVM.

A 2029 target for post-quantum resistance

The Protocol cluster’s stated target is to make Ethereum L1 post-quantum resistant across three core areas: execution, consensus and data. The target date is December 2029.

The plan places post-quantum security among the protocol’s multi-fork research arcs, indicating that the work is framed as a longer-running effort rather than a single upgrade item.

Five research arcs spanning multiple forks

The publication names five research arcs intended to extend across more than one fork. Together, they cover changes to how the network reaches finality, addresses cryptographic risks, handles privacy, manages state and advances zkEVM work.

The announcement does not present these areas as completed protocol changes. Instead, it sets them out as priorities for ongoing research and development through the stated planning horizon.

Hegotá fork priorities

For the upcoming Hegotá fork, the post identifies FOCIL and Frame Transactions as its SFI’d headliners. The Foundation’s publication places these items within the nearer-term fork agenda while also describing longer-term research priorities.

The Hegotá work and the multi-fork arcs show a roadmap divided between upcoming fork planning and research that may require several protocol upgrades. The framework does not by itself establish implementation outcomes or timelines beyond the stated December 2029 post-quantum target.

Ethereum’s protocol agenda also develops alongside work connected to decentralized finance, though the priorities publication specifically focuses on protocol-level areas including security, finality, privacy, state and zkEVM.
