Bitcoin Core adopts faster disclosure policy for AI-findable vulnerabilities

Bitcoin Core has updated its vulnerability disclosure policy to address flaws that are easy to find, including issues that could be identified through a simple large language model prompt.

The project now classifies these issues as “easily discoverable.” For vulnerabilities in that category, Bitcoin Core says it will release point fixes for every maintained major version as soon as possible and publish a security advisory without its usual severity-based embargo period.

The change concerns the handling of qualifying future vulnerabilities. It does not announce that a new Bitcoin Core vulnerability has been discovered.

What the new classification covers

Bitcoin Core’s security-advisories policy describes “easily discoverable” vulnerabilities as flaws that can be found with minimal effort. The project specifically includes vulnerabilities discoverable using a simple LLM prompt within that definition.

The policy acknowledges that the ease of finding a flaw can affect the case for keeping technical details under embargo while users and operators wait for a fix.

How disclosure will change

For an easily discoverable vulnerability, Bitcoin Core plans to publish point releases for each maintained major version as soon as possible. It will also publish a security advisory without applying the standard embargo periods that depend on severity.

This is a policy change rather than a report of a specific active issue. The available information does not identify a particular affected version, vulnerability type, or fix.

  • Point releases are planned for every maintained major version.
  • A security advisory will be published without the usual severity-dependent embargo.
  • The approach applies when a vulnerability meets the project’s “easily discoverable” standard.

AI and software-security disclosure

The policy explicitly treats the availability of simple LLM-assisted discovery as relevant to disclosure decisions. It reflects a narrower operational question: whether withholding details remains useful when a flaw may be straightforward for others to uncover independently.

The move comes as AI-related security questions have also shaped discussion around cryptographic risk and network resilience. Readers can also review coverage of Ethereum researcher Justin Drake’s call for planning around potential AI cryptography risk.

Bitcoin Core’s update sets out its own process for vulnerabilities that meet the new classification, rather than making a broader claim about AI capabilities or the security of Bitcoin as a whole.
