Ethereum Postpones Glamsterdam Hoodi Testnet Activation Over Smart-Contract Gas Risks

Ethereum core developers have postponed the planned activation of the Glamsterdam upgrade on the Hoodi testnet, which had been scheduled for October 26, 2026, at 17:42:48 UTC.

The Ethereum Foundation said the delay will allow further investigation into interactions between EIP-8037 and smart contracts already deployed on Ethereum mainnet. A new activation date has not been set.

The decision also removes the planned Amsterdam execution-layer activation, Gloas consensus-layer activation, and Hoodi gas-limit increase to 200 million from the previously scheduled deployment.

The review follows analysis from ChainSecurity on proposed gas-accounting and repricing changes that could affect assumptions used by existing contracts when external calls fail.

Planned Hoodi activation withdrawn

The Hoodi deployment had been announced as the next testnet step for Glamsterdam before the Ethereum Foundation published the postponement on October 22. Although the originally planned activation would have fallen on a Monday, it was withdrawn before that date.

Developers have not provided a replacement schedule. The stated reason is the need to assess EIP-8037’s interaction with existing mainnet smart contracts before proceeding with the testnet activation.

The earlier timetable for the planned deployment is covered in Ethereum’s prior Hoodi announcement.

Gas changes prompted contract-compatibility review

ChainSecurity’s analysis focused on Glamsterdam proposals affecting gas accounting and repricing. According to the firm, the changes can modify the amount of gas available after a failed call.

That behavior could allow certain failure-handling paths to complete in circumstances where they would previously have reverted. ChainSecurity said this may undermine gas-safety assumptions embedded in existing smart contracts.

The Ethereum Foundation’s decision to postpone the testnet activation indicates that developers are reviewing those compatibility implications rather than advancing on the prior schedule.

What changes in the postponed plan

The postponement removes the scheduled Amsterdam execution-layer activation and Gloas consensus-layer activation on Hoodi. It also removes the planned increase of Hoodi’s gas limit to 200 million.

The delay concerns the Hoodi testnet activation. The Ethereum Foundation has not announced a new date for the testnet event.

  • The October 26, 2026 Hoodi activation will not proceed as scheduled.
  • The planned Hoodi gas-limit increase to 200 million has been removed.
  • Further investigation of EIP-8037 and existing mainnet contracts is required before a new date is announced.
