Zcash holders back faster blocks and existing halving schedule in NU7 vote

Zcash coinholders have backed proposals to shorten the network’s target block spacing and preserve its existing halving schedule in an advisory vote on the scope of Network Upgrade 7, or NU7.

Approximately 2.4 million ZEC participated in the coinholder poll, according to reported results published on the Zcash Community Forum. The faster-block proposal would reduce target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds.

Coinholders also supported retaining Zcash’s current halving schedule. Reported results put support for that proposal at 98.9%.

The vote indicates stakeholder preference rather than activating a consensus change. Any upgrade would still need protocol development, testing and network deployment.

Support for 25-second target block spacing

The NU7 coinholder poll asked participants about reducing Zcash’s target block spacing from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. Reported results showed overwhelming support for the change, with secondary reporting placing support at 99.9%.

A shorter target block interval is a proposed protocol-level adjustment, not a change enacted by the poll itself. The advisory process helps inform the scope considered for NU7.

Holders favor current halving schedule

Coinholders also voted on whether Zcash should retain its existing halving schedule. The reported result showed 98.9% support for preserving that schedule.

The proposal’s framing has drawn comparisons with Bitcoin’s halving structure, but the poll concerned Zcash’s own existing issuance schedule and its treatment in the NU7 scope process.

Advisory result does not activate an upgrade

The NU7 polling process was advisory. Its results do not independently change Zcash consensus rules or deploy new network software.

For either proposal to proceed, the changes would require further protocol work, testing and deployment across the network. The result therefore reflects coinholder sentiment at this stage rather than a completed upgrade.

The process comes as other Bitcoin-related infrastructure work continues, including the recent Bitcoin Core 31.1 release with chainstate and privacy fixes.
