Ethereum Foundation Outlines Native Transaction Assertions for Post-Execution Checks

The Ethereum Foundation has published research on native transaction assertions, a proposed security mechanism designed to check a transaction’s final outcome after its execution.

The concept is intended to address uncertainty around transaction results and complement work on Clear Signing. Rather than relying only on what a user sees before submitting a transaction, an assertion could evaluate the net changes produced on-chain.

Under the proposal, read-only assertion logic could inspect changes to balances, storage, code, nonces and emitted events. If predefined conditions fail, the transaction’s execution body could be reverted.

The research describes EIP-7906 as one possible implementation. The proposal remains a draft, and its protections would depend on wallets or protocols choosing to require assertions.

How the proposed checks would work

Native transaction assertions would run after the main transaction execution and examine its resulting state changes. The stated aim is to let an assertion verify whether the outcome matches conditions set in advance.

This approach focuses on the net effect of a transaction rather than individual operations during execution. The assertion logic is read-only, meaning it evaluates the resulting changes instead of modifying them.

If an assertion does not pass, the execution body would be reverted. This could provide a way for a user or protocol to define acceptable final conditions for a transaction before it is submitted.

  • Balances: checks on net balance changes.
  • Storage, code and nonces: checks on changes to account or contract state.
  • Events: checks on emitted event data.

EIP-7906 proposes a trailing assertion frame

EIP-7906, titled Transaction Assertions via State Diff Opcode, proposes an implementation based on a trailing ASSERT frame. The draft includes the TXTRACE and EVENTDATACOPY opcodes for accessing transaction state-diff and event information.

According to the proposal, a failed assertion would revert the execution body, but the transaction would remain included and gas would still be charged. That distinction means an assertion failure would not operate as though the transaction had never been submitted.

The proposal depends on EIP-8141. It is not a finalized Ethereum protocol change, and the Ethereum Foundation’s post presents it as one possible route for implementing the broader concept.

Assertion use would require wallet or protocol enforcement

EIP-7906 would not require every Ethereum transaction to carry an assertion. The proposal instead creates a mechanism that wallets, applications or protected protocols could adopt where they consider outcome checks necessary.

In practice, the protection described by the research would depend on the party initiating or accepting a transaction requiring an assertion. A wallet could include one for a user flow, while a protocol could make an assertion part of its interaction requirements.

The work follows other Ethereum Foundation research and infrastructure efforts, including the Ethereum Foundation’s digital public infrastructure website and its introduction of zkAPI for private, unlinkable API usage credits. Native transaction assertions are still a proposal, not an announced network-wide requirement.
