Bitcoin Falls Below $77,000 After August PPI Rises 5.4%

Bitcoin fell below $77,000, according to CoinDesk, after U.S. producer-price data renewed attention on the interest-rate outlook. The outlet reported that bitcoin was down nearly 2% over 24 hours, while the CoinDesk 20 index declined about 3%.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Producer Price Index for final demand rose 5.4% in the 12 months through August 2026. The release provided the inflation backdrop for the market move.

CoinDesk linked the cryptocurrency sell-off to hotter producer inflation, higher Treasury yields and increased expectations for a Federal Reserve rate increase. That attribution reflects the outlet’s market analysis rather than a policy decision by the Fed.

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to hold its September FOMC meeting on September 15–16, 2026. Its policy decision and press conference are scheduled for September 16.

Zcash among the largest reported decliners

Zcash was among the larger cryptocurrency losses cited by CoinDesk. The report put its decline at roughly 12%, to about $1,134.

The reported moves illustrate how crypto assets were trading lower across the session, with bitcoin’s decline accompanied by a broader drop in the CoinDesk 20 index.

Producer-price data put inflation back in focus

The 5.4% year-over-year increase in the final-demand PPI was reported in the official August release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Producer-price figures are one indicator markets use when evaluating inflation conditions.

CoinDesk’s assessment was that the data contributed to traders reassessing the likelihood of a rate increase. The Federal Reserve had not yet issued its September decision at the time of the reported market reaction.

Attention turns to the September FOMC meeting

The Federal Reserve calendar lists the September 15–16 meeting, with the decision and press conference on the second day. Market participants will be watching that meeting for the central bank’s policy response and guidance.
