SEC Streamlines Spot Crypto ETF Listings — New Rule Cuts Approval Time to ~75 Days

The U.S. SEC has approved new listing rules allowing generic standards for spot crypto ETF, cutting down approval time dramatically and opening doors for more cryptos beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum.

On September 18, 2025, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved a policy shift that allows national exchanges like NYSE, Nasdaq, and Cboe to use generic listing standards for spot cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This replaces the older case-by-case approval process and can reduce approval times from as long as 240 days to approximately 75 days. 

This regulatory breakthrough will facilitate the listing of ETFs tied to additional digital assets such as Solana, XRP, and potentially others which had been bottlenecked by the previous dual-filing requirements. Industry stakeholders see this as a watershed moment for the broader adoption of digital asset ETFs. 

Under the new rules, exchanges must meet detailed criteria around market surveillance, standards for assets (including regulated futures existing for at least six months), liquidity, and disclosure. Asset managers who have already submitted applications for Solana and XRP ETFs are expected to benefit immediately and could see approvals as early as October 2025. 

Despite the optimism, there remain operational and legal challenges: compliance with the new listing standards, coordination with service providers, and ensuring transparency for investors. Some issuers caution that while the framework is in place, actual product launches depend on satisfying the SEC’s regulatory and operational requirements.
