AI coding challenge cuts quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction estimate to about $67

StarkWare says a week-long coding challenge using AI-assisted development reduced the estimated GPU-compute cost of constructing a Quantum-Safe Bitcoin transaction from about $320 to roughly $67.

The result reflects a 79% reduction in the estimate, according to StarkWare’s Quantum Hub. CoinDesk reported a closely aligned $66 estimate and said the underlying computation became about five times faster.

The improvement is based on off-chain search benchmarks rather than a newly mined Bitcoin transaction. StarkWare says the current benchmark does not generate live transactions, leaving the lower cost estimate unproven on Bitcoin mainnet.

Challenge targeted GPU-intensive transaction construction

StarkWare, Yukon Research and Eigen Labs launched the Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Optimization Challenge on September 16, inviting developers, researchers and AI agents to optimize the GPU computation used by the method.

The first Quantum-Safe Bitcoin mainnet transaction required approximately 3,100 GPU-hours across roughly 100 GPUs. StarkWare placed its compute cost at around $320, excluding the Bitcoin network transaction fee.

The new benchmark result points to a substantially lower estimated compute requirement. StarkWare reports about $67, while challenge coverage cited by CoinDesk places the estimate at $66. The small difference reflects reporting of the same benchmark-based improvement rather than two separately demonstrated transaction costs.

Benchmark gains are not yet a mainnet demonstration

The challenge result should not be read as the cost of a completed new on-chain transaction. StarkWare states that its benchmark does not currently generate live Bitcoin transactions, and the improved code has not yet been used to prepare another transaction that was mined on Bitcoin.

That distinction matters because the reported figure is an extrapolation from improved off-chain performance. It indicates progress in the computation needed for the approach, but further work is needed to establish whether the result can be reproduced in a live transaction workflow.

The reported use of AI coding tools also fits a wider pattern of AI agents being applied to cryptographic optimization tasks, including a separate ECDSA.Fail quantum benchmark improvement.

Quantum-Safe Bitcoin remains a limited fallback

The Quantum-Safe Bitcoin method is not a network-wide quantum-security upgrade. StarkWare describes it as a limited fallback mechanism and says it does not retroactively protect coins whose public keys have already been exposed.

The method also currently requires direct submission to a miner. As a result, the lower benchmark estimate does not by itself change Bitcoin’s standard transaction process or establish broad quantum protection for existing holdings.

The challenge demonstrates that specialized cryptographic computation can be optimized quickly, including with AI-assisted coding. Its practical impact will depend on whether the benchmark gains can be converted into repeatable, mined Bitcoin transactions.
