AI Agents Cut ECDSA.Fail Quantum Benchmark by 86.1%
An open research effort called ECDSA.Fail reported an 86.1% reduction in its qubit–Toffoli resource score for a reversible secp256k1 point-addition circuit.
The circuit is relevant to the computational machinery required for a potential Shor’s-algorithm attack on elliptic-curve cryptography, including the cryptography used by Bitcoin and Ethereum. The benchmark, however, measures a specific circuit component rather than a full attack.
At the paper’s July 26, 2026 cutoff, the leading submission used 1,151 logical qubits and an average of 1,299,453 executed Toffoli gates. Its resulting score was approximately 1.496 billion.
