SunBit says it has deployed 30 bitcoin-mining heating systems in Finland
Finnish company SunBit says it has installed 30 systems that use heat generated by Bitcoin-mining hardware to warm homes and other buildings. CoinDesk reported that all but one of the installations are in Finland.
The company’s Bitcoin Boiler is designed to capture heat from mining equipment in water, then circulate that water through water-based radiators or underfloor-heating systems. The deployment presents mining hardware as a source of usable building heat rather than a standalone computing load.
Whether the approach reduces a property owner’s net heating cost depends on more than the heat produced. It also depends on the revenue generated by the miners, the cost of electricity, Bitcoin’s price and changes in network mining conditions.

CoinDesk’s modeled assumptions indicated that mining revenue slightly exceeded electricity costs, with a break-even Bitcoin price estimated at just under $70,000 before equipment costs. That calculation is not a guarantee of profitability or a measure of the system’s heating efficiency.
How the Bitcoin Boiler system is designed to work
SunBit’s system routes the heat created by Bitcoin-mining hardware into water. That heated water can then supply a building’s existing water-based radiator network or underfloor heating.
The arrangement seeks to use an unavoidable output of mining machines: the electricity consumed by the hardware is ultimately released as heat. In this case, that heat is directed into a heating system while the machines also attempt to earn Bitcoin mining revenue.
The model differs from a conventional home-mining setup, where heat may simply be vented or treated as a byproduct. It also follows a broader interest in smaller-scale mining deployments, including home-focused equipment.
Mining revenue determines the economic case
CoinDesk reported that, under its assumptions, revenue from mining could slightly exceed the electricity bill, producing a modeled break-even Bitcoin price just below $70,000. The estimate excludes the cost of the equipment, which is important when assessing whether an installation can recover its initial investment.
The result can change as Bitcoin’s price moves, electricity rates change, or network difficulty shifts. A system that produces a favorable result under one set of assumptions may not do so under another.
The expected 2028 Bitcoin block-reward halving is another material consideration. By reducing the block reward, the halving could reduce mining revenue before some owners have recovered their upfront costs.

- The reported break-even estimate excludes equipment costs.
- Electricity pricing and network difficulty affect mining returns.
- The 2028 halving could weaken revenue economics for operators.
Heat recovery is not the same as higher heating efficiency
The use of mining heat can offset part of a building’s heating demand, but it should not be confused with a claim that mining equipment is more energy-efficient than other heating technologies. CoinDesk noted that heat pumps can provide multiple units of heat for each unit of electricity consumed.
SunBit’s potential advantage therefore rests on the value of Bitcoin mining revenue alongside the recovered heat. If that revenue declines, the financial case for running mining hardware for heat can weaken even if the building still uses the heat produced.
For households and building owners, the technology is best understood as a combined mining-and-heating model whose outcome remains sensitive to market and operating conditions.
