Bitcoin Hashrate Returns Above 1 ZH/s as Mining Difficulty Rises
Bitcoin’s seven-day average hashrate rose above 1 zettahash per second, or 1,000 exahashes per second, by October 22. The reading was the network’s highest since March 3.
The recovery comes as major publicly traded mining companies have shifted portions of their capacity toward artificial intelligence and high-performance computing workloads. The available evidence shows that the wider Bitcoin network’s computing power nevertheless recovered.
Mining difficulty also moved higher. On October 16, Bitcoin’s difficulty increased 5.92% to 140.58 trillion, raising the computational work required to mine blocks.

The figures point to continued competition among miners, but they do not establish why all of the returning hashrate came online. Suggestions that smaller operators are acquiring or redeploying equipment displaced by larger companies remain analysis rather than a verified conclusion.
Network hashrate clears the 1 ZH/s level
The seven-day average hashrate exceeded 1 ZH/s on October 22, according to reporting cited in the evidence. That marked its highest level since March 3.
A subsequent mempool.space mining dashboard reading put the one-week hashrate at about 1.05 ZH/s. Hashrate measures the aggregate computational power miners are directing to Bitcoin’s proof-of-work network.
Difficulty increases as miners compete for blocks
Bitcoin’s mining difficulty rose 5.92% on October 16 to 140.58T. Difficulty periodically adjusts in response to changes in the network’s mining power, aiming to keep block production near Bitcoin’s target schedule.
At the time of verification, mempool.space estimated the next adjustment at an increase of 5.35%. BlocksBridge had reported a 5.16% projected increase, but such projections are dynamic and can change as network conditions change.
A further increase would mean miners collectively need to expend more computational work to find blocks. It does not by itself indicate the profitability or financial position of any individual mining operation.
AI and HPC shift does not halt broader recovery

Major public miners have redirected some capacity toward AI and high-performance computing, according to the supplied reporting. Those workloads can compete with Bitcoin mining for infrastructure, including power capacity and data-center resources.
Even so, the hashrate data show that total Bitcoin mining power recovered above the 1 ZH/s threshold. The data support the coexistence of the AI and HPC pivot with a stronger aggregate hashrate reading; they do not prove a single explanation for the recovery.
The development adds context to wider discussion about AI-related infrastructure in crypto, including Bitcoin Lightning support for AI agents and efforts around private AI API payments.
