OpenAI, the renowned artificial intelligence startup behind models like GPT, is aiming to raise $6.5 billion in a new funding round, pushing its valuation to an estimated $150 billion, according to a Bloomberg report citing insider sources. This significant leap comes with backing from major tech giants, including Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, and Thrive Capital.

In addition to the equity raise, OpenAI is also exploring a $5 billion debt facility, further enhancing its capital for operational needs such as computing power and expanding its AI development efforts. The company’s last reported valuation was $86 billion, making this a substantial increase, further cementing its place as one of the most valuable private companies in the U.S.

With this new valuation, OpenAI would become the second most valuable venture-backed private company in the U.S., just behind SpaceX. This valuation surpasses the initial market cap of nearly all U.S. venture-backed startups, except for Meta (formerly Facebook).

Microsoft, having already invested approximately $13 billion in OpenAI, continues to be the largest backer, and Nvidia’s potential involvement signals a significant collaboration between a key AI hardware provider and one of the leading AI software developers. OpenAI has raised about $13.5 billion across 11 funding rounds to date.
