China AI Growth Set to Outpace US Despite 6-Month Lag, Says Former Google China President

Kai-Fu Lee, former Google China president, believes China AI-powered apps will surpass US adoption by early 2024, even though Chinese AI models lag behind US counterparts by six to nine months. Lee anticipates new AI-driven devices will revolutionize the market.

Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) models are approximately six months behind those being used in the United States, but they could soon surpass them in terms of adoption, according to Kai-Fu Lee, the former president of Google China. Speaking at the AVCJ Private Equity Forum in China, Lee highlighted that while Chinese AI technology is slightly behind, its application and adoption could quickly outpace that of the US by early next year.

The former executive noted that the gap between large language models (LLMs) used by Chinese companies and their US counterparts is around six to nine months. However, the overall AI landscape in China is expected to progress rapidly as the cost of training AI models has decreased significantly in recent months.

“Apps, I would predict, by early next year will proliferate in China much faster than in the US,” Lee stated. He added that it remains to be seen whether small startups or large firms will lead this app revolution.

Lee, who is also the founder of 01.AI and Sinovation Ventures, emphasized that AI’s future would depend on new types of devices capable of always being “on” and “listening.” He believes that current smartphones may not meet the demands of next-generation AI apps and services.

He pointed to the recent launch of the AI-powered “Friend” necklace, a wearable device designed to act as a virtual companion that constantly listens to its user. This represents a glimpse of the AI-powered future Lee envisions, where constant interaction with AI becomes the norm.
