AI Optimization Challenge Cuts Quantum-Safe Bitcoin Construction Estimate to About $67

An open optimization challenge associated with StarkWare, Yukon Research and Eigen Labs has reduced the estimated GPU-compute cost of constructing a quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction from roughly $320 to about $67 in one week.

The challenge accepted AI-agent submissions and measured improvements to the computation required for the proposed transaction construction. StarkWare reported the $67 estimate, while CoinDesk cited about $66, a difference that appears consistent with rounding or leaderboard timing.

The reported figure is not a Bitcoin network transaction fee. It is an estimate of the GPU-compute cost needed to construct the transaction under the challenge’s benchmark.

The result also does not make Bitcoin quantum-safe. The proposed construction is nonstandard and retains operational constraints, including the need for direct submission to miners.

A benchmark improvement, not a network fee

The one-week result indicates that participants substantially lowered the estimated computing cost for the challenge’s quantum-safe transaction construction. The work focused on optimization rather than a change to Bitcoin’s consensus rules or transaction-fee market.

That distinction is important: a lower estimate for GPU computation does not mean ordinary Bitcoin users can send quantum-safe transactions for about $67, nor does it establish a new fee level on the Bitcoin network.

The latest independent reporting also said the improved estimate had not yet been demonstrated in another mined Bitcoin transaction. The benchmark should therefore be treated as an optimization result rather than a fully established operational cost.

AI agents participated in the challenge

The organizers’ materials describe a quantum-safe Bitcoin GPU-grinding challenge, with submissions designed to improve the computation used to construct the proposed transaction. AI agents were among the participants.

The result shows how automated coding and optimization workflows can be applied to narrowly defined cryptographic engineering tasks. It does not, on its own, validate every implementation detail or remove the deployment hurdles for the approach.

  • The challenge was associated with StarkWare, Yukon Research and Eigen Labs.
  • The reported reduction was from approximately $320 to approximately $67 in estimated GPU-compute cost.
  • The estimate concerns transaction construction, not the Bitcoin transaction fee.

Operational limits remain

The construction described in reporting is nonstandard. It has limitations that include direct miner submission, which differs from ordinary transaction propagation and introduces practical adoption requirements.

A benchmark improvement can be relevant to research into Bitcoin’s exposure to future quantum computing risks, but it is not equivalent to a network-wide quantum-security upgrade. Any broader deployment would require solutions to technical and operational constraints.

The challenge outcome is also separate from wider efforts to connect AI agents with Bitcoin payment infrastructure, such as Block Adds Bitcoin Lightning Payment Support to x402 for AI Agents.
