Vitalik Buterin says Hegotá could be Ethereum’s last ‘normal’ fork

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said Hegotá could be the network’s last “normal” fork, marking a possible shift in how Ethereum’s upgrades are defined and understood.

In a September 27 post, Buterin wrote that Hegotá, which is planned for 2027, is likely to be the last fork whose features would be recognizable to someone familiar with Ethereum in 2015.

Hegotá remains in early planning and does not have a confirmed mainnet date. Buterin’s comments describe a prospective direction for Ethereum’s development rather than a finalized upgrade specification.

A transition beyond familiar upgrade features

Buterin said Ethereum’s development after Hegotá will increasingly focus on underlying cryptographic capabilities. He identified recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus and quantum-safe cryptography among the areas expected to shape that work.

The distinction is significant because it frames future upgrades less around user-visible blockchain features and more around the systems used to verify computation, secure the network and improve its consensus processes.

Buterin’s remarks build on the broader direction outlined in the related report on Ethereum’s cryptographic world computer vision for 2030. The immediate scope and final contents of post-Hegotá upgrades remain subject to Ethereum’s development process.

PeerDAS as an early step

Buterin described PeerDAS as the start of Ethereum’s transition from being only a blockchain toward a more powerful cryptographic system. His characterization places PeerDAS within a longer-term technical shift rather than treating it solely as an isolated upgrade component.

The planned Hegotá fork is separately tracked on Ethereum’s roadmap, where it is listed as being in early planning. No mainnet date has been confirmed.

Ethereum’s upgrade pipeline continues to include nearer-term testing and engineering work, including the Sepolia test planned for Glamsterdam. Buterin’s Hegotá comments point to a longer horizon in which cryptographic infrastructure becomes a central focus.

What remains undecided

Buterin said Hegotá is likely, rather than certain, to be Ethereum’s last normal fork. The wording leaves room for changes in technical priorities, upgrade scope and timing as development proceeds.

For now, the confirmed points are that Hegotá is planned for 2027, is in early planning and has no confirmed mainnet launch date. The post-Hegotá direction outlined by Buterin is an architectural vision centered on cryptographic tools and verification systems.
