Vitalik Buterin outlines Ethereum’s cryptographic world computer vision for 2030

Vitalik Buterin published an essay titled “The cryptographic world computer” on September 27, 2026, setting out a longer-term vision for Ethereum’s evolution through 2030.

The essay describes a network intended to extend beyond a conventional blockchain. Buterin characterized post-Lean Ethereum as a hybrid of blockchain concepts and modern cryptographic machinery.

The proposed direction centers on allowing Ethereum to process and verify more computation without requiring every participant to re-execute the same work. According to the roadmap, that approach is intended to support scalability and privacy improvements.

The vision remains a roadmap rather than a completed protocol change. Its implementation depends on a series of technical priorities becoming central to Ethereum’s development after the next stage of upgrades.

A shift beyond conventional blockchain execution

Buterin’s proposal brings together SNARK-based verification, multi-party block construction and optimized proof-of-stake. These components form part of a model in which cryptographic proofs can take a larger role in validating computation.

The roadmap also includes PeerDAS data sampling, privacy-preserving computation and decentralized off-chain components. Taken together, the technologies point to an Ethereum design where the chain coordinates a broader set of verification and computation processes.

This is an architectural direction, not a claim that every element is already deployed. The essay outlines how Ethereum could develop as cryptographic techniques mature and are integrated into the protocol.

Hegota identified as the last ‘normal’ fork

Buterin identified Hegota, planned for 2027, as likely Ethereum’s last “normal” fork. After that point, he expects the network’s roadmap to place greater emphasis on cryptographic and verification-focused technologies.

The post-Hegota priorities named in the essay include recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, optimized consensus and quantum-safe cryptography. These areas would move from longer-term research and development goals toward the network’s primary focus.

What the roadmap seeks to change

Buterin’s framing also places privacy alongside scalability. The roadmap therefore addresses both the verification burden of a shared network and the potential for computation that preserves more user or application privacy.

The proposal sets a direction for Ethereum’s technical development toward 2030. Its practical effect will depend on the progress, security and adoption of the individual technologies described in the roadmap.
