Binance Estimates Security Incident Impact at About $6.3 Billion, With $3 Billion Frozen
Binance has confirmed a security incident involving unauthorized withdrawal transactions, estimating the total impact at approximately $6.3 billion in an October 30 update.
The exchange said approximately $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen on-chain. Binance also said user funds were safe and that it would cover losses through its SAFU fund and company funds.
Binance described the matter as a security incident under investigation. Its update did not characterize the event as a confirmed exchange hack.

Earlier preliminary reports put the amount leaving Binance-linked wallets at at least $5.57 billion and reported roughly $1.8 billion frozen by Tether and Circle. Binance’s later figures supersede those preliminary estimates for the overall impact and frozen assets.
Initial investigation points to compromised employee device
Binance said its initial investigation suggested that a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer enabled access to a service container.
The exchange said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked. The investigation remains ongoing, and the company has not provided a final account of how the unauthorized withdrawal transactions were carried out.
The incident places renewed attention on operational security controls around employee endpoints and systems with access to production services. That is distinct from an allegation of a compromise of wallet private keys.
Frozen assets and coverage commitments
According to Binance, around $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen on-chain at the time of its update. The figure covers the total assets frozen on-chain and is higher than earlier reports focused on freezes attributed to Tether and Circle.
Binance said users’ funds were safe and that it would use SAFU and company funds to cover losses. The statement outlines the exchange’s position on customer protection while the investigation continues.
The event also comes amid broader scrutiny of security dependencies across crypto infrastructure. Recent reporting on the Teku and Besu Docker trust-store patches after an eMudhra certificate weakness illustrates how software and service-layer controls can create security considerations beyond private-key custody.

Why the revised estimate matters
The difference between the preliminary $5.57 billion tally and Binance’s approximately $6.3 billion estimate highlights the uncertainty that can accompany early assessments of transactions across multiple networks. Binance’s stated $3 billion in frozen assets also replaces the earlier reported $1.8 billion figure as the company’s latest overall assessment.
The available information supports describing this as a Binance security incident involving unauthorized withdrawals. Whether it is ultimately classified differently will depend on findings from the continuing investigation.
On-chain recovery efforts can be complicated when assets move across networks or services. In another recent case, a wallet linked to the Drift exploit sent about $61 million in ETH to Tornado Cash, underscoring the differing paths assets may take after an alleged exploit.
