The much-anticipated HBO documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, which aired on October 8, identified Canadian Bitcoin Core developer Peter Todd as Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. However, the claims made by filmmaker Cullen Hoback have been met with significant criticism and skepticism from the Bitcoin community.

Despite the documentary’s suggestion that Todd is Satoshi, Todd himself has strongly denied the accusation, and there are several reasons why experts believe Todd is not the Bitcoin founder.

Coding Style Discrepancy

Satoshi Nakamoto’s coding style has long been considered unique and highly idiosyncratic, a point emphasized by British Bitcoin Core developer Amir Taaki. Satoshi’s code was unconventional, filled with quirks, and written in a way that suggested the author was an older person, possibly from an engineering or physics background.

In contrast, Peter Todd was only in his early 20s when the Bitcoin white paper was released in 2008. It seems unlikely that Todd, who had just left high school and was studying fine arts at the time, would have written such complex code or conceptualized Bitcoin from scratch.

Public Denials from Peter Todd

Peter Todd has repeatedly denied being Satoshi Nakamoto, even going so far as to joke about the accusation. In the documentary, Todd describes the claims as “ludicrous” and said the suggestion was “yet another example of journalists missing the point.” He also rejected the idea in various public statements, including an email to CoinDesk, where he stated, “Of course, I’m not Satoshi.”

Todd’s open and transparent nature contrasts with Nakamoto’s secretive persona, making it unlikely that he would have been able to maintain Satoshi’s anonymity for so long.

Philosophical Differences

While Todd shares some of Satoshi’s philosophical ideals, his focus has primarily been on Bitcoin’s security and scalability, rather than on building a revolutionary new financial system. Satoshi’s work embodied strong libertarian ideals, seeking to create a decentralized, stateless currency.

Todd’s involvement with Bitcoin has been more focused on enhancing its technical security and efficiency, suggesting he is more of an improver of the system than its original creator.

Conclusion

Despite the HBO documentary’s claims, the evidence does not convincingly point to Peter Todd being Satoshi Nakamoto. From differences in coding style to public denials and philosophical contrasts, it seems more likely that Todd, while an important figure in Bitcoin’s development, is not the elusive creator of the world’s first cryptocurrency.
