Base Unveils ENS Subnames with Dutch Auction Launch to Simplify Onchain Identity

Base introduces Basenames, enabling users to create ENS subnames for easier onchain identity. A fair launch via Dutch auction is planned, with prices starting at 100 ETH.

Base, a Layer 2 network built on Ethereum by Coinbase, is set to launch Basenames, a new feature that allows users to create subnames through the Ethereum Name Service (ENS). These subnames will enable users to convert complex hexadecimal addresses into easily recognizable, human-readable names, simplifying onchain interactions.

According to Base’s official website, Basenames will serve as a fundamental onchain tool, empowering anyone to establish their digital identity on the Base network. ENS subnames operate under an existing ENS (parent) name, similar to how subdomains work on traditional websites. For example, an ENS domain owner like base.eth can generate an unlimited number of subnames, such as bob.base.eth, which are managed by the owner of the parent name.

When Basenames goes live, all available names will be listed via a Dutch auction, offering users a fair opportunity to purchase and claim their desired names. The auction will begin with a premium fee of 100 ETH, which will decrease to 0.39 ETH over the first 12 hours, continuing to drop over 36 hours. After the auction concludes, no additional premium fee will apply to the names.

Jesse Pollak, the lead of Base, announced on X that Basenames would officially launch on Tuesday. He emphasized that this feature aims to make it easier for users to start building or living onchain.
