In a high-profile meeting, President Nayib Bukele of El Salvador visited Tesla’s gigafactory in Austin, Texas, where he met with tech mogul Elon Musk to discuss the future of artificial intelligence (AI), Bitcoin, and El Salvador’s growing influence in the technology space. The meeting took place on September 21 and was highlighted in a video posted by Bukele on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing his tour of the Tesla facility with Musk.

The visit comes as part of Bukele’s trip to the United States to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly in New York. During their discussion, Musk praised Bukele, calling him “an amazing leader,” and stated they had an “excellent conversation” about the future of humanity, the role of AI, and the impact of technology like robotics on the world.
The meeting reflects El Salvador’s ongoing commitment to tech innovation, having adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021. Following this move, the country has attracted significant international attention, and its efforts toward financial and technological advancements have made waves across global markets.
El Salvador’s Push for AI and Tech Innovation:
El Salvador’s interest in AI and emerging technologies has grown, especially following the mainstream adoption of Bitcoin, which has helped promote financial inclusion and reduce reliance on the US dollar. In May, ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood met with Bukele, predicting that El Salvador’s gross domestic product (GDP) could increase tenfold by 2029 as the country continues to embrace innovation in Bitcoin, AI, and technology.
During the Tesla visit, Musk and Bukele discussed how advanced technologies, including AI and robotics, could transform the world. Bukele also brought a gift of El Salvadoran coffee to Musk, while Musk reciprocated with a can of Coca-Cola.
