Huawei New AI Chip Could Challenge Nvidia Dominance in the AI Market

Huawei is set to unveil its Ascend 910C AI chip, which could rival Nvidia’s leading H100 processor. With major Chinese tech companies lining up for orders, the chip is poised to challenge Nvidia’s dominance despite U.S. sanctions
Chinese electronics giant Huawei Technologies is on the brink of releasing a new artificial intelligence (AI) chip, the Ascend 910C, which could pose a significant challenge to Nvidia’s current dominance in the AI chip market. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the Ascend 910C is already being tested by major Chinese tech companies, including ByteDance, Baidu, and China Mobile.

The Ascend 910C represents a substantial upgrade from its predecessor, the Ascend 910B, which was comparable to Nvidia’s older A100 chip. This new processor is expected to close the gap with Nvidia’s more advanced H100 chip, potentially offering an alternative to Chinese companies affected by U.S. sanctions that restrict access to high-end semiconductor technology.
Huawei is reportedly preparing to ship 70,000 units of the Ascend 910C in October, with an estimated total value nearing $2 billion. Despite the promising advancements, some analysts are skeptical about Huawei’s ability to meet the high expectations, given the ongoing U.S. sanctions that could hinder its progress.
These sanctions, originally imposed during the Trump administration, have both limited Nvidia’s ability to sell its top-tier chips to Chinese customers and spurred domestic innovation within China. Huawei has responded by building facilities to develop and produce semiconductor equipment domestically, as well as collaborating with Chinese firms to manufacture high-bandwidth memory chips.
Nvidia, meanwhile, is not resting on its laurels. The company is reportedly working on the next-generation B20 chip, based on its Blackwell architecture, designed to comply with U.S. sanctions. Intel is also entering the fray with its Gaudi 3 processors, tailored for the Chinese market.
As the AI chip race heats up, Huawei’s success with the Ascend 910C could mark a pivotal moment in the tech industry, potentially reshaping the landscape of AI hardware and challenging Nvidia’s longstanding supremacy.
