ChatGPT Gains Real-Time Video Interaction as OpenAI Expands Advanced Features

OpenAI unveils ChatGPTT new video capabilities, enabling real-time object recognition and conversational feedback. This feature, available for Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers, rivals recent launches from Google and Meta

ChatGPT Can Now Interact in Real-Time Video: A New Era of AI Communication

OpenAI has rolled out a groundbreaking update to ChatGPT, introducing video capabilities that enable real-time object recognition and interactive feedback. The feature, called “Advanced Voice Mode with Vision,” allows users to point their phones at objects or share live video for AI analysis and conversational responses.

The launch marks a significant milestone in AI interactions, competing directly with Google’s Gemini 2.0 and Meta AI, both of which recently announced similar advancements in real-time AI capabilities.

What’s New?

The video feature lets ChatGPT analyze visual inputs in real time. Users can point their phone cameras at objects or scenarios, receiving immediate insights and responses. For example, the AI can solve math problems written on paper, suggest recipes based on pantry items, or engage children in interactive games.

This feature is part of OpenAI’s “12 Days of OpenAI” campaign, which has already introduced new tools like the generative video app Sora, reinforcement fine-tuning, and Apple Intelligence integration.

How to Access

Currently available only to Plus ($20/month), Team, and Pro ($200/month) subscribers, users can activate the feature by selecting the voice icon next to the chat bar and enabling the video mode. Screen sharing is also supported with additional menu options.

A Race Against Rivals

The launch comes as tech giants Google and Meta race to innovate in AI. Google’s Project Astra, now in trusted testing, boasts real-time task execution and memory retention for extended conversations. Meanwhile, Meta’s assistant integrates augmented reality with smart glasses for discreet, real-time interactions.

Challenges and Delays

OpenAI’s rollout wasn’t without hurdles. Initially announced in April 2024, the feature faced delays following backlash over its advanced voice mimicking capabilities, which included imitating actress Scarlett Johansson’s voice without her consent. This controversy temporarily shelved the video feature, which relies on advanced voice mode.

A Glimpse into the Future

While the feature is live for U.S.-based subscribers, European Union users will have to wait as OpenAI navigates regulatory requirements. Educational and enterprise users are set to receive access by January 2025.

What’s Next?

OpenAI’s move into real-time video interaction positions ChatGPT as a frontrunner in AI technology. With competitors like Google and Meta introducing equally robust features, the landscape of AI-powered communication is rapidly evolving.
