Block Adds Bitcoin Lightning Payment Support to x402 for AI Agents

Block announced that it has joined the x402 Foundation and contributed Bitcoin Lightning payment support to the x402 protocol.

The move connects Lightning payment capabilities with x402, an open payment standard designed to enable autonomous payments for API access, data and digital services.

Block said the integration is aimed at agentic commerce, where AI agents can make payments as part of interactions with online services.

The announcement was also reported by Cointelegraph, which confirmed Block’s participation in the foundation and its Lightning contribution to x402.

What Block contributed to x402

Block said it contributed support for Bitcoin Lightning payments to the x402 protocol. x402 is designed as an open standard for payments involving APIs, data and digital services.

The contribution places Lightning among the payment options supported by the protocol for agentic use cases. Block’s announcement does not establish adoption levels or transaction volumes for the integration.
