AI Voice Deepfakes Fool 58% of Listeners — New Study Sparks Global Fraud Fears
A groundbreaking study has revealed that 58% of AI-generated voices can no longer be distinguished from real human speech — a milestone that experts warn could fuel identity theft and financial fraud.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge and Pindrop Labs conducted large-scale perception tests across 20,000 voice samples generated by leading AI models, including OpenAI’s Voice Engine, ElevenLabs, and Meta’s AudioCraft.
The findings were chilling: most listeners failed to identify AI clones, even when familiar with the original speaker. In some cases, cloned voices successfully passed bank verification and customer service authentication systems, revealing a new layer of vulnerability.

The rise of AI voice cloning has already seen dramatic real-world impacts. A Hong Kong-based firm reportedly lost $25 million in a deepfake scam earlier this year when employees were tricked into wiring funds after a “CEO call.”
