With Telegram surpassing 1 billion monthly active users, its blockchain ecosystem, TON (The Open Network), is rapidly gaining traction. By March, TON had 41 million native accounts, fueling increased interest from major venture capital firms.

The TON Foundation recently announced a $400 million investment round, attracting backing from top VC firms, including Sequoia Capital, Ribbit, Benchmark, Draper Associates, Kingsway, Vy Capital, Libertus Capital, CoinFund, SkyBridge, Hypersphere, and Karatage.

Strategic Investment in Toncoin

These firms acquired Toncoin (TON), the native cryptocurrency of The Open Network, as part of strategic partnerships designed to expand the TON ecosystem. However, the TON Foundation has not disclosed further details on how these investments will be deployed.

TON operates as an independent blockchain supporting the development of Mini Apps within Telegram, leveraging its massive user base. While initially developed by Telegram’s founders, TON has since evolved into a fully decentralized network.

As of January 2025, Toncoin is the only cryptocurrency accepted for app services on Telegram. With 121 million unique holders, the blockchain has witnessed exponential growth, skyrocketing from 4 million to 41 million accounts in just one year.

Telegram’s Blockchain Ambitions—Onboarding Millions

According to the TON Foundation, its goal is to onboard 30% of Telegram’s active users onto the blockchain within the next three years. If successful, this would mark a massive leap in Web3 adoption, integrating blockchain technology into the daily activities of Telegram’s vast user base.

Benchmark partner Peter Fenton projects that Telegram’s user base will exceed 1.5 billion by 2030, creating even greater potential for TON’s expansion.

Rising Venture Capital Interest in Blockchain Projects

The TON investment aligns with a broader trend of growing venture capital interest in blockchain technology. With crypto and decentralized finance (DeFi) gaining mainstream legitimacy, institutional investments are rapidly increasing.

Simon Wu, a partner at Cathay Innovation, noted that blockchain projects are becoming viable financial solutions, particularly in areas like asset management, transactions, and tokenization.

Cointelegraph recently reported that crypto venture capital deals topped $1.1 billion in February, reflecting renewed enthusiasm in DeFi services, decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN), and tokenized real-world assets (RWA).

With $400 million in new capital, a rapidly growing user base, and Telegram’s continued support, TON is positioning itself as a key player in decentralized finance and blockchain adoption.
