Litecoin Core v0.21.5.6 Adds MWEB Hardening Ahead of Scheduled Rule Change

The Litecoin project released Litecoin Core v0.21.5.6 on August 2, 2026, describing the update as an urgent maintenance release. The release focuses on hardening protections around MimbleWimble Extension Blocks, or MWEB.

The update adds limits on MWEB service requests and strengthens validation for transactions, blocks and peer-to-peer services. It also includes protections intended to address malformed MWEB data and adds mining-related safeguards.

Most notably, the release schedules a consensus-rule change at Litecoin mainnet height 3,154,440. Nodes running v0.21.5.6 will reject a specific invalid MWEB block construction after that point.

The change makes timely upgrades particularly important for miners and mining pools, which could otherwise produce blocks that upgraded nodes will not accept.

MWEB validation and service protections

According to the release notes, Litecoin Core v0.21.5.6 expands MWEB checks across several parts of node operation. The changes cover transaction and block validation, as well as peer-to-peer service handling.

The release includes request limits and relay-policy limits for MWEB-related activity. It also adds handling and validation safeguards for malformed MWEB data. Taken together, these measures are intended to make node processing of MWEB data more robust.

At mainnet height 3,154,440, v0.21.5.6 nodes are scheduled to begin rejecting an MWEB block that contains a pegout-signaling kernel while its pegout list is empty.

This is a consensus-rule change rather than only a local policy adjustment. In practical terms, blocks matching that condition can be rejected by nodes that have upgraded once the specified height is reached.

The project’s release notes state that miners and pools should upgrade before activation. The reason is straightforward: a miner that produces a block rejected under the new rule risks having that block rejected by upgraded nodes.
