Ethereum Foundation explores native transaction assertions for enforcing transaction outcomes
The Ethereum Foundation has published research outlining native transaction assertions, a proposed mechanism intended to let onchain logic enforce rules about a transaction’s final outcome.
The concept would allow a transaction to be checked after execution against conditions signed by the user or otherwise defined in the transaction flow. If those conditions are not met, the transaction’s actions could be reverted.
The research presents the idea as a potential security improvement alongside Clear Signing. It remains a design under development rather than a confirmed Ethereum upgrade feature.

Checking a transaction’s net effects
Native transaction assertions are designed to examine the net changes produced by a transaction, rather than relying only on checks made during individual contract calls. The proposed checks could cover starting and final balances, storage changes, code changes and emitted events.
Under the model described by the Ethereum Foundation, onchain logic could compare those effects with a rule governing the intended result. A failed rule would revert the transaction’s actions.
This approach is aimed at making the final state produced by a transaction subject to explicit verification. The Foundation frames it as a possible complement to clearer transaction-signing information, not as a replacement for it.
EIP-7906 is one proposed implementation
The post identifies EIP-7906 as one possible way to implement native transaction assertions. The proposal describes a read-only POST_TX frame that can inspect a transaction after its main execution has completed.
EIP-7906 includes the TXTRACE, TXDIFF and EVENTDATACOPY opcodes. These are intended to provide access to information needed to inspect transaction effects, including execution traces, state differences and event data.
The technical design is relevant to Ethereum’s wider protocol-development work, including discussion around the network’s planned testnet activation process.
- POST_TX would provide a read-only context after transaction execution.
- TXTRACE, TXDIFF and EVENTDATACOPY are proposed tools for examining execution results.

No upgrade inclusion has been confirmed
The Ethereum Foundation states that the design is still being developed. EIP-7906 has not been confirmed for inclusion in an Ethereum upgrade.
That status means the research should be treated as a proposal and technical direction, not as an activated network feature. Its eventual form, timing and adoption remain unresolved.
The work follows other Ethereum Foundation research and development efforts, including its recently introduced zkAPI concept for private, unlinkable API payments.
