Google AI Detects Diseases from Coughs: A Breakthrough in Medical Diagnostics

Google HeAR model, used by researchers in India, is detecting diseases like TB and COPD through cough sounds, offering new possibilities for early and accessible diagnosis.

Google latest AI innovation, the Health Acoustic Representations (HeAR) model, is making waves in the medical world by offering a new way to diagnose life-threatening diseases through the sound of a cough. In a recent report, Google Research highlighted how a team of scientists in India is leveraging this technology to detect respiratory illnesses, including tuberculosis (TB) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Launched in March, Google HeAR model is trained on a vast dataset of 300 million audio samples, including approximately 100 million cough sounds. This deep learning approach enables the AI to identify specific patterns within these sounds, offering a powerful tool for medical audio analysis.

The ability to detect health issues from how someone coughs or even how they speak—considering factors like tone, pitch, and pace—opens up new possibilities for early diagnosis. Google Research Director of Engineering, Shravya Shetty, emphasized that HeAR outperforms other models in a wide range of tasks, demonstrating its superior ability to capture meaningful health-related acoustic data.

In India, Salcit Technologies has integrated HeAR into its Swaasa app, using it to analyze coughs and detect TB—a disease that, despite being treatable, often goes undiagnosed due to limited access to healthcare. AI-driven solutions like HeAR could play a crucial role in making healthcare more accessible and affordable, especially in regions where medical resources are scarce.

This innovative approach is part of a broader trend where AI is being harnessed to address critical health challenges. While much of the conversation around AI focuses on deepfakes and other controversial uses, the promise of using AI for early disease detection continues to inspire groundbreaking research.

For instance, in the UK, researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed an AI model called EMethylNET, which shows potential in early cancer detection and treatment planning. Similarly, medtech company Ezra uses advanced imaging and AI to scan for cancer in vital organs, dramatically improving early detection rates and patient outcomes.

As AI continues to evolve, its role in healthcare is set to expand, offering new ways to diagnose and treat diseases before they become life-threatening. Google’s HeAR model is just one example of how this technology could revolutionize medical diagnostics, potentially saving millions of lives worldwide.
