AI Startup Osmo Aims to Revolutionize Digital Scents: A New Frontier in Technology

Artificial intelligence firm Osmo is ambitiously working to bring us closer to a future once imagined in the 1960s, when “Smell-O-Vision” first made headlines. Unlike its predecessor, Osmo’s mission is not just to entertain but to transform how humans interact with the world by teaching computers to understand and generate scents. Osmo’s approach is a complex fusion of science and engineering, but its goal is straightforward: to create generative AI that can handle scents just as effectively as today’s AI systems manage images and sounds. The challenge of teaching a computer to smell is far greater than giving it the ability to see or hear. While microphones and cameras have been around for decades, there is no direct analog for scent detection. Technologies like breathalyzers can analyze specific gases, but these devices are typically tuned to detect particular molecules, making them unsuitable for the broader task of identifying and classifying a wide range of odors.
Osmo’s CEO and co-founder, Alex Wiltschko, a former Google engineer, explains that the process of getting computers to recognize smells involves associating specific molecules with certain aromas and then training an AI to recognize these patterns. However, unlike visual or auditory data, there is no pre-existing “smell map” for AI to study. Creating a dataset from scratch, with labeled examples of molecular bond associations, has been an incredibly complex and precise task.
Wiltschko highlights the precision required: “The reason why it’s so challenging is because you can move one tiny thing around in that molecule, like one bond, and the scent of the molecule goes from roses to rotten egg.”
Beyond the novelty of a digital Smell-O-Vision, Osmo’s technology has profound implications for humanity. The company envisions AI systems capable of superhuman feats of smell, such as detecting diseases like cancer or identifying low blood sugar levels associated with diabetes. Additionally, the team is exploring ways to recreate smells using molecular synthesis, potentially enabling the “teleportation” of scents over the internet. This could add a new dimension to marketing and branding, as companies might one day need to consider how their brand smells in addition to how it looks and sounds.
