AI Rapid Rise in Philippines BPO Industry: Economic Boon or Threat?

The Philippines is facing a significant economic challenge as artificial intelligence (AI) technologies rapidly infiltrate its business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, which includes the country’s vast network of call centers. According to a report by Saritha Rai for Bloomberg News, the BPO industry, a cornerstone of the Philippine economy, is on track to generate over $38 billion in revenue this year. However, the same cost-saving pressures that initially drove companies to outsource jobs to the Philippines are now pushing them to adopt AI solutions, potentially reshaping the industry in ways that could jeopardize its future.
AI “copilots” have become a prevalent tool in many BPO firms, particularly within call centers. These AI technologies assist human agents by summarizing customer interactions, processing content, and analyzing sentiments in real-time, leading to increased efficiency and reduced operational costs. While these AI systems currently support human workers, their growing capabilities are beginning to replace jobs that were once secure.

The speed at which AI is being integrated into the BPO sector has caused concern among workers. Christopher Bautista, a 47-year-old veteran of the call center industry, shared his story with Bloomberg, describing how he was placed on “floating status”—a state of employment without pay—after his company lost a contract, a situation he believes is due to the rise of AI. Bautista eventually left the industry for a sales position but remains convinced that AI will soon replace many jobs in the BPO sector.
This concern is not unfounded. Avasant, an outsourcing advisory firm cited by Bloomberg, estimates that AI could eliminate up to 300,000 BPO jobs in the Philippines, many of which are in call centers, over the next five years. However, the same analysis indicates that AI could also create approximately 100,000 new jobs in areas such as algorithm training and data curation. This presents a complex situation for the Philippines: while the industry may shrink in terms of traditional roles, new opportunities in tech could emerge.
The potential loss of jobs in the BPO sector, which is the largest private employer in the Philippines and a significant contributor to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), is particularly troubling. For many Filipinos, BPO jobs provide a reliable income without the need for a university degree or overseas employment. The industry has been seen as a pathway to the middle class and a means of stimulating the creation of other white-collar jobs within the country. However, the rapid adoption of AI threatens to disrupt this trajectory.
Despite these challenges, the Philippines is not backing away from AI. The country is becoming a testing ground for new AI tools, and the government has taken proactive steps by establishing an AI research center and launching various training initiatives aimed at upskilling the industry’s 1.7 million employees.
As the BPO sector continues to evolve, the Philippines will need to navigate the balance between embracing AI advancements and safeguarding the jobs that have been a cornerstone of its economic growth.
