Slash Cuts Ties with Twitter After Solana Meme Coin Hack Hits Verified Account

Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash quits Twitter after repeated hacks—latest one used his account to promote a fake Solana meme coin named $GUNS.

In a bold move against social media vulnerability, iconic Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash has permanently exited Twitter (now X) following yet another security breach—this time involving a Solana-based meme coin scam.

The legendary rocker posted what appears to be his final tweet on Tuesday, revealing that his account had been repeatedly compromised to promote false crypto schemes, including the recent unauthorized promotion of a token called $GUNS. The meme coin, falsely billed as the official cryptocurrency of the band, was launched on the Solana blockchain just after April Fool’s Day, causing confusion among fans and crypto observers alike.

“This was a considered decision after repeated hacks,” Slash wrote. “It reflects a shift in how I’d like to stay connected moving forward.” The tweet also included suggestions for fans to follow him on alternative platforms, with some urging him to join Bluesky—a decentralized alternative to X.

The hacked posts, which have since been deleted, promised insider investment and hyped the coin’s launch with posts like: “In 2 hours, we’re launching a meme coin on SOLANA. Stay tuned…” A pinned post even falsely claimed that “$1M will be invested in $GUNS in the next hour” to create manufactured hype. At the time of writing, the token remains live on PumpFun, holding a dwindling value of just $3,300.

This incident mirrors a broader trend of celebrity-targeted scams. In mid-2024, Metallica’s X account was similarly hacked to promote another Solana-based meme coin, $METAL, which reached a brief $10 million market cap before collapsing.

Despite this recent episode, Guns N’ Roses has shown legitimate enthusiasm for new tech. In February 2024, the band debuted an AI-generated music video for their single The General, blending Unreal Engine visuals and Stable Diffusion artwork to produce a magenta-drenched cyberpunk experience.

This clear line between innovation and exploitation is what Slash’s departure seems to highlight. While the band embraces emerging technologies in controlled creative spaces, social media remains a volatile frontier.

As crypto’s intersection with pop culture intensifies, the need for more secure and transparent practices—especially on platforms with massive influence—becomes increasingly critical.
