Polkadot Launches First Blockchain Education Course for Policymakers and UK MPs

Polkadot Blockchain Academy (PBA) is launching an exclusive Web3 education program for policymakers. The three-day course, hosted in Switzerland, will provide UK MPs with insights into blockchain regulation and innovation.

Polkadot Pioneers Blockchain Education for Policymakers

In a significant move toward blockchain adoption and regulatory awareness, Polkadot Blockchain Academy (PBA) is set to introduce the crypto industry’s first structured blockchain education course tailored for policymakers. The course, titled Blockchain Basics for Policymakers, will run from April 6 to April 8, 2025, in Zug, Switzerland—a region often referred to as Crypto Valley due to its progressive stance on blockchain and digital assets.

This initiative is designed to equip government officials with fundamental knowledge of blockchain technology, decentralized finance (DeFi), and Web3 applications. The first cohort will include UK Members of Parliament (MPs) from different political parties, emphasizing the growing importance of blockchain in policymaking.

The program is spearheaded by Lisa Cameron, founder of the UK-US Crypto Alliance and former MP (2015–2024), who emphasized the urgency of crypto education in regulatory discussions. In a statement, Cameron highlighted:

“Given the prominent role that blockchain technology is poised to play in the UK’s tech sector, it is essential that policymakers are equipped with the knowledge to make informed decisions.”

She added that the Polkadot Blockchain Academy’s initiative offers a “valuable opportunity for MPs to gain firsthand insights into the real-world applications of Web3.”

A Critical Moment for UK Crypto Regulation

The UK government is actively refining its approach to crypto regulation, making this course particularly timely. On January 10, 2025, the UK Treasury amended financial laws to clarify that crypto staking is not classified as a collective investment scheme, which would subject it to stricter regulations.

This amendment is part of a broader effort to establish a comprehensive crypto regulatory framework by early 2025, as promised by UK financial authorities in November 2024. Lawmakers attending the Polkadot course will have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of these evolving policies.

According to Chrissy Hill, Chief Legal Officer and interim COO at Parity Technologies (a key contributor to Polkadot’s ecosystem), educating regulators is crucial for blockchain’s future. Hill stated:

“Policymakers play a crucial role in shaping the future of blockchain, yet have empirically lacked access to structured education on its technical and regulatory foundations.”

She further emphasized Polkadot Blockchain Academy’s commitment to bridging the knowledge gap, ensuring that governments develop policies that support innovation while maintaining consumer protection.

Polkadot’s Global Expansion in Blockchain Education

The Switzerland-based course marks the beginning of a broader initiative by Polkadot Blockchain Academy. The academy plans to launch additional blockchain education programs in other key jurisdictions, ensuring that decision-makers worldwide gain the expertise needed to regulate blockchain technology effectively.

By educating policymakers through structured learning, Polkadot is fostering an informed regulatory environment, which could pave the way for more favorable policies and greater blockchain adoption in financial and government sectors.
