Elon Musk Taps Dogecoin Creator to Refocus X on Creators Amid Political Chaos

Dogecoin co-founder Billy Markus criticized X political direction. Elon Musk responded by inviting him to help build creator tools, signaling a shift back to platform innovation.
In the latest twist within Elon Musk’s evolving digital empire, Dogecoin co-creator Billy Markus—known online as Shibetoshi Nakamoto—has taken aim at X’s current trajectory. On March 21, Markus voiced his frustration over what he called the platform’s shift toward “political screaming,” claiming that X has strayed far from its earlier mission of empowering creators.

“Politics is the true cancer,” Markus wrote in a sharp post. “It ruins everything, especially brains.” He lamented the platform’s apparent abandonment of creator-focused innovation, pointing out that tools meant for creators have been “completely ignored.”
The post quickly caught the attention of Elon Musk, X’s owner and chairman, who responded directly: “Help build.” Musk’s brief but impactful reply is being interpreted as an open invitation for Markus to work alongside him on rejuvenating X’s creator ecosystem.
The exchange marks a potential turning point for X, formerly Twitter, which Musk acquired in October 2022 and rebranded in July 2023. Under Musk’s ownership, the platform has leaned into bold, often polarizing changes—many of them political in nature. With Dogecoin’s co-creator potentially onboard to reshape the platform’s tools for content creators, the company may be preparing to pivot once again.
This development is especially notable considering the history between Musk and Markus. Musk has long been a vocal supporter of Dogecoin, often tweeting memes and cryptic messages about the coin, which have historically moved markets. Back in April 2019, Musk famously called Dogecoin his “fav cryptocurrency,” and in March 2020, he referred to it as “the best coin.”
In an unexpected twist to this narrative, Musk—who now serves as a senior advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump—was also appointed as head of the Department of Government Efficiency. Ironically, the department’s acronym mirrors DOGE, a nod to the meme coin that Markus and Jackson Palmer created in 2013 as a lighthearted jab at the crypto world.
Dogecoin’s influence has since gone far beyond its meme origins, inspiring the rise of countless imitators, including Shiba Inu, Bonk, and dogwifhat. As X reevaluates its priorities, bringing a creator like Markus into the fold could signal a much-needed recalibration—away from political noise and back toward platform innovation and cultural engagement.
