Acting Administrator Janet Petro confirmed the development on Wednesday, addressing concerns over the potential impact on NASA’s operations.

“So we are a federal agency; we are going to have D.O.G.E come,” Petro told reporters in Washington. “They are going to look—similarly to what they’ve done at other agencies—at our payments.”

The move aligns with Musk’s broader agenda to cut what he calls “government waste.” President Donald Trump, in his second term, tasked Musk with streamlining federal spending, and NASA’s multi-billion-dollar budget is the latest target.

NASA Braces for Financial Overhaul

While Musk’s involvement in government efficiency has been controversial, the scrutiny of NASA’s budget has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest. SpaceX, one of NASA’s biggest contractors, stands to be affected by any budget restructuring.

“Any employee or any person that’s coming in, we will check out their conflict of interest, make sure they don’t have any conflicts of interest with any of the companies that we work with,” Petro reassured.

Musk claims these actions will reduce the federal deficit by $1 trillion by 2026. However, critics warn that slashing government programs at this scale could lead to unintended consequences, particularly in public services and scientific research.
