Detroit to Accept Cryptocurrency for Taxes, Leading U.S. Municipal Innovation

Detroit will become the largest U.S. city to accept cryptocurrency payments for taxes and municipal fees by mid-2025, enhancing payment options for residents through a partnership with PayPal. This initiative aligns with the city vision of technological innovation and financial inclusion.

Detroit has announced a groundbreaking move to accept cryptocurrency payments for taxes and municipal fees, set to launch in mid-2025, making it the largest U.S. city to adopt this approach. Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted this initiative as part of the city’s commitment to a “technology-friendly environment,” with plans to increase accessibility for residents and foster local entrepreneurship. Managed by PayPal, the system will allow immediate conversions to U.S. dollars, ensuring secure and streamlined processing.

City Treasurer Nikhil Patel detailed the strategy, emphasizing the platform’s ability to support both crypto holders and traditional users. He pointed out that the updated payment channels will provide easier access for the unbanked, offering a wider range of electronic payment options and improving internal operations. Additionally, the city is inviting blockchain innovators to propose solutions for civic challenges, further integrating technology into Detroit’s urban landscape. Interested applicants must submit proposals by December 15, 2024.

Detroit’s decision aligns with the growing trend of cryptocurrency adoption in government, following states like Colorado, Utah, and Louisiana, which accept crypto for certain state payments. The city’s adoption of crypto for municipal services may influence other major cities to consider similar initiatives.

This initiative comes as the pro-crypto Donald Trump has been elected U.S. president, potentially signaling a favorable shift in national crypto policy. Detroit’s plan will enable residents to use cryptocurrency for property taxes, municipal fees, and various permits, marking a significant step in municipal crypto adoption that could set a trend across the country.
