Ohio Police Stop $17K Crypto Scam as Bitcoin ATM Fraud Surges in Westlake

Westlake police report a growing wave of Bitcoin ATM scams targeting residents. A Chase Bank manager helped stop a $17,000 fraud just in time.
Police in Westlake, Ohio, have issued a public warning following a surge in Bitcoin ATM scams, which have recently targeted unsuspecting residents. In a near-tragic incident, a bank manager at Chase Bank successfully intervened to prevent a local couple from falling victim to a $17,000 crypto fraud scheme.

The couple had arrived at the bank with intentions to withdraw the full amount, believing it was required to clear a warrant from the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office. However, the bank manager sensed something was wrong and immediately alerted local authorities.

Thanks to this timely intervention, the couple’s funds were saved. Unfortunately, two other Westlake residents were not as lucky, having fallen for similar fraudulent tactics involving crypto ATMs and impersonation scams.

🚨 Scammers’ Tactics: Manipulating Fear

According to Captain Jerry Vogel of the Westlake Police Department, these scams often follow a pattern of psychological manipulation. Victims are contacted by individuals claiming to be from reputable institutions like the Social Security Administration, Microsoft, or law enforcement.

“They’ll say you have a terrible virus on your computer or a pending warrant,” Vogel explained. “They use fear tactics, especially on older residents, to force immediate action.”

He emphasized that law enforcement will never call to request payment, and agencies such as the IRS do not accept tax payments via gift cards or cryptocurrency.

💸 Bitcoin ATMs: The Perfect Trap

In another local case, a victim was duped into depositing $5,500 into a Bitcoin ATM located inside a Sam’s convenience store after a fake call from the Social Security Administration. Following the incident, the store owner promised to remove the ATM within a month, acknowledging the risks it posed to the community.

Captain Vogel offered a blunt warning: “Be extremely cautious of anyone instructing you to buy gift cards or deposit money into a crypto ATM. These transactions nearly always lead to irreversible losses.”

Westlake police continue to raise awareness and educate citizens—especially the elderly—about crypto scams. Officers are urging residents to report any suspicious calls or financial activity immediately.

With scam operations growing more sophisticated, community vigilance and quick-thinking bank employees remain the first line of defense.
