J.P. Morgan Asset Management Sets 10% Annual Bitcoin Base Case for 10–15 Years
J.P. Morgan Asset Management has added Bitcoin to its 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions for the first time, assigning the asset a 10% annualized base-case return over a 10–15-year investment horizon.
The forecast appears in the firm’s 31st annual edition of its long-term assumptions. It provides a return range for Bitcoin but does not amount to its inclusion in the firm’s core portfolio construction framework.
The firm said Bitcoin’s volatility and unstable correlations remain barriers to placing it in its main covariance matrices. That distinction means a long-term return assumption does not automatically translate into a model portfolio allocation.

The 10% base case is higher than the firm’s stated projections for U.S. large-cap equities and gold. Long-range assumptions remain estimates rather than guarantees of future performance.
Bitcoin enters the long-term assumptions
J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s 2027 assumptions cover a 10–15-year horizon and now include a Bitcoin return range. The stated base case is a 10% annualized return.
The move gives Bitcoin a defined place in the firm’s published long-term market outlook. However, the firm continues to treat the asset differently from investments used in its central covariance modelling.
How the forecast compares
The 10% Bitcoin base case exceeds the firm’s stated long-term forecasts of 7.5% for U.S. large-cap equities and 5.5% for gold.
CoinDesk reported that the return range also includes a -9.7% annual bear case and a 17% annual bull case. Those scenarios underline the degree of uncertainty around a long-horizon estimate for Bitcoin.
- Bitcoin base-case annualized return: 10%
- U.S. large-cap equities forecast: 7.5%
- Gold forecast: 5.5%
Volatility remains central to the firm’s approach

Despite publishing a Bitcoin return assumption, J.P. Morgan Asset Management has not added Bitcoin to its main covariance matrices. The firm cited volatility and unstable correlations as the reasons.
Covariance models are used to assess how assets move in relation to one another. The exclusion indicates that the firm sees limits in applying its core portfolio-modelling approach to Bitcoin at this stage.
The emphasis on structural risk follows broader attention to market resilience after a previous crypto flash crash. It also separates a return forecast from an endorsement of any particular investment decision.
