Historic Auction at Christie: Bitcoin Ordinals Artwork “Ascend” to Go Under the Hammer

Christie London will auction “Ascend,” a dynamic digital artwork inscribed on Bitcoin Ordinals protocol, on October 10. This will be the first-ever Bitcoin Ordinal piece in a live auction, merging traditional and digital art.

On October 10, Christie’s London will host a landmark event for the digital art world, auctioning the first-ever Bitcoin Ordinal artwork, “Ascend,” during its Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale. This dynamic piece, created by Ryan Koopmans and Alice Wexell, is part of their “The Wild Within” series, which revitalizes Soviet-era architectural ruins through digital art. “Ascend” will be the only digital artwork featured in the sale, signifying a major crossover between traditional and digital art spaces.

A Revolutionary Approach to Digital Art

“Ascend” highlights the Iveria Sanatorium in Tskaltubo, Georgia, a once-prominent Soviet health destination now overtaken by nature. The artists bring this decaying structure back to life through a blend of photography and advanced 3D techniques. The artwork dynamically transitions between day and night modes, reflecting real-time conditions at the site through a process enabled by innovative recursion coding.

Inscribed on Bitcoin’s Immutable Blockchain

What makes “Ascend” truly unique is its inscription on Bitcoin using the Ordinals protocol. This protocol allows digital artifacts to be inscribed directly onto Bitcoin’s blockchain, preserving the artwork in a permanent, decentralized form. Inscribed on a satoshi mined on the same day Koopmans minted his first Ethereum piece from the series, “Ascend” creates a meaningful link between Bitcoin and Ethereum, bridging two major blockchain ecosystems.

Digital Art Meets the Physical World

While “Ascend” exists as a digital artifact, a physical print of the artwork will also be offered to the winning bidder, available in one of three sizes. This hybrid offering further connects the digital and physical art worlds, making the auction a pivotal moment in the adoption of Ordinals as a medium for fine art.

The Significance of the Auction

For Koopmans and Wexell, this event is not just about selling a piece of art; it’s about pushing the boundaries of what blockchain technology can offer to artists. As Koopmans remarked, “Inscribing on Bitcoin is a fantastic tool to record provenance and preserve the longevity of artwork on-chain.” This auction also marks a milestone for the broader art community, demonstrating how Bitcoin’s Ordinals protocol can serve as a powerful medium for dynamic and complex digital works.

With Ordinals unlocking new possibilities for digital artists, this auction at Christie’s represents a groundbreaking moment for the future of blockchain art.
