Solana Study Recommends 10% Stake Floor for Geo-Aware Leader Schedule

Solana has published an analysis of SIMD-0675, a proposed geo-aware leader schedule designed to reorder the network’s existing stake-weighted leader schedule.

The proposal aims to place consecutive leaders closer geographically while preserving the number of leader windows assigned to each validator. The analysis examined the potential latency benefits and the trade-offs created by longer consecutive leader runs.

The study used 6,250 synthetic networks based on 124 current validator locations. Solana said its conclusions are conditional on the current distribution of validator geography and stake.

Its recommended parameters are a STAKE_FLOOR near 10% and a RUN_LENGTH between three and seven. At RUN_LENGTH=7, identified as the selected knee in the analysis, the reported mean handoff-latency gain was 29.1 milliseconds.

How the proposed schedule works

SIMD-0675 would change the ordering of the random leader schedule rather than alter the number of leader windows allocated to validators. Under the proposed approach, consecutive leaders would be arranged to be geographically closer.

The objective is to reduce latency during handoffs between leaders. The study’s reported performance result is based on simulations, not a claim of a network-wide production outcome.

The work follows other recent Solana network-development updates, including coverage of the Solana changelog’s Alpenglow devnet gate and software releases.

Recommended parameter range

The analysis recommends setting STAKE_FLOOR at approximately 10%. It also recommends a RUN_LENGTH from three to seven leader windows.

Solana selected RUN_LENGTH=7 as the knee of its analysis. At that setting, the study reported a mean handoff-latency improvement of 29.1 milliseconds across its modeled networks.

These figures should be read in the context of the study’s assumptions: the synthetic networks were based on 124 current validator locations and the conclusions depend on the current geographic and stake distribution.

  • Recommended STAKE_FLOOR: near 10%
  • Recommended RUN_LENGTH: 3 to 7
  • Reported mean handoff-latency gain at RUN_LENGTH=7: 29.1 ms

Trade-offs cited in the study

The analysis cautions that larger run lengths create greater geographic persistence. It also identifies increased regional concentration and greater exposure to fictitious-location attacks as risks associated with longer runs.

The recommendations therefore represent a balance in the modeled data between lower handoff latency and the risks from concentrating consecutive leadership geographically. They are not presented as universal settings independent of changes in validator participation or location.

Solana has also published analysis on changes to network timing, including its report on the effects of a 250ms slot-time target.
