Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former safety researcher at OpenAI, has voiced serious concerns about the company’s approach to AI security. In a recent interview with Dwarkesh Patel, Aschenbrenner alleged that OpenAI’s security practices were “egregiously insufficient” and claimed that the company prioritizes rapid AI model deployment over safety.

Aschenbrenner detailed internal conflicts within OpenAI, highlighting a shift in focus toward aggressive growth. He noted that he was dismissed after documenting his concerns and sharing them with external experts and board members. He stated, “The questions they asked me when they fired me were about my views on AI progress, AGI, and whether I was loyal to the company.”
AGI, or artificial general intelligence, refers to AI that matches or surpasses human intelligence across various fields. This goal has been a central focus for OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman. However, Aschenbrenner’s claims suggest that safety measures have been sidelined in favor of this ambitious pursuit.
In his interview, Aschenbrenner revealed that he had circulated an internal memo detailing his security concerns. Following a significant security incident, he updated and shared this memo with board members, leading to his termination. He recounted, “When I raised security issues, they would tell me security is our number one priority, but when it came time to invest resources, security was not prioritized.”
This sentiment echoes statements from Jan Leike, a former member of OpenAI’s superalignment team. Leike described the team’s efforts as “sailing against the wind,” indicating that safety protocols often took a backseat to product development under Altman’s leadership. The dissolution of the superalignment team and the subsequent formation of a new safety team led by Altman himself have intensified scrutiny on OpenAI’s commitment to safety.
Aschenbrenner also expressed concerns about the global race to develop AGI, particularly the potential for China to surpass the United States in this field. He warned of significant geopolitical stakes, stating, “China is going to have an all-out effort to infiltrate American AI labs… What will be at stake will not just be cool products, but whether liberal democracy survives.”
Recently, it was disclosed that OpenAI required its employees to sign non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) that prevented them from speaking out about the company’s practices. Aschenbrenner, who did not sign such an NDA but was offered significant equity, joined other current and former employees in demanding the right to speak out without fear of retaliation. An open letter signed by industry figures like Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in AI development.
In response to these issues, CEO Sam Altman claimed he was unaware of the contentious NDAs and assured the public that the legal team was addressing the matter. Altman admitted, “This is on me and one of the few times I’ve been genuinely embarrassed running OpenAI; I did not know this was happening and I should have.”

OpenAI has since released all employees from the disputed non-disparagement agreements and removed the clause from its departure paperwork, aiming to foster a more transparent and accountable environment for AI development.
