In a groundbreaking move, FIFA has partnered with Mythical Games to launch a free-to-play mobile football game called FIFA Rivals. Set to debut on iOS and Android in summer 2025, the game leverages blockchain technology powered by Polkadot’s Mythos blockchain.

This collaboration signifies FIFA’s growing involvement in Web3 and blockchain-based gaming, following earlier partnerships during the Qatar World Cup and multiple NFT ventures.

FIFA and Mythical Games Join Forces

FIFA Rivals follows the successful model of NFL Rivals, a blockchain-powered mobile game launched in April 2023 by Mythical Games. Similar to its NFL counterpart, FIFA Rivals will allow players to:

• Build and manage football clubs.
• Compete in real-time online matches.
• Trade and collect NFT player cards featuring football legends and future stars.

Mythical Games CEO John Linden anticipates the game to attract over 100 million players, surpassing NFL Rivals’ 6 million-user milestone.

“Our goal is to create new benchmarks in the Web3 gaming space,” said Linden.

Expanding Blockchain Collaborations in Sports

This partnership underscores FIFA’s commitment to exploring blockchain innovations. Nate Nesbitt, a spokesperson for Mythical Games, highlighted the game’s accessibility:

“FIFA Rivals features a shallow learning curve for casual gamers while providing advanced features for hardcore players. This partnership opens doors for further collaborations between Web3 studios and major sports brands.”

FIFA’s previous ventures into blockchain include:

• A 2022 partnership with blockchain startups for games and collectible apps during the Qatar World Cup.
• Launching 100 exclusive NFTs in December 2023, offering tickets to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
• Rolling out 900 digital collectibles on the Polygon network via OpenSea.

The FIFA Collect NFT platform currently operates on Algorand and Ethereum’s Polygon network.
