Malaysia Crushes 985 Bitcoin Mining Machines in Power Theft Crackdown

Malaysian authorities have destroyed 985 Bitcoin mining machines valued at $452,500, seizing the equipment in a crackdown on electricity theft linked to illegal crypto mining. This operation underscores Malaysia ongoing efforts to combat power theft associated with cryptocurrency operations.

In a dramatic display of enforcement, Malaysian authorities recently destroyed 985 Bitcoin mining machines valued at approximately $452,500. The machines were crushed under the weight of a steamroller following a court order, as part of a broader crackdown on electricity theft linked to illegal cryptocurrency mining operations.

These machines were seized during various enforcement operations carried out between 2022 and April 2023. The destruction of the mining equipment highlights Malaysia’s firm stance against illegal Bitcoin mining activities, which have become increasingly common in the country.

This crackdown is part of a larger campaign aimed at addressing power theft issues, especially those related to cryptocurrency mining. Just last week, the Sepang district administration arrested seven individuals involved in stealing electricity to power their mining operations.

According to Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Transformation, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, cryptocurrency miners in Malaysia have stolen a staggering RM3.4 billion ($777 million) worth of electricity between 2018 and 2023.

The surge in illegal mining activities in Malaysia can be partially attributed to the ban on cryptocurrency mining in China in 2021. As a result, many mining operations have relocated to Southeast Asia, where countries like Malaysia offer competitive electricity prices and favorable infrastructure, making it an attractive location for such activities.

Malaysia’s recent actions serve as a warning to those involved in illegal Bitcoin mining. The destruction of these machines sends a clear message that the authorities are determined to tackle power theft and ensure the integrity of the country’s energy resources.
