Tornado Cash Developer Seeks $1M in Legal Funds to Defend Open-Source Software

Alexey Pertsev, a developer behind the privacy-focused cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, is currently raising funds to support his legal defense in the Netherlands. On August 10, Pertsev made a public appeal for financial assistance via a video on X (formerly Twitter), seeking to raise between $750,000 and $1 million to cover his legal fees. Supporters of Pertsev have been encouraged to donate Ethereum through Juicebox, a decentralized fundraising platform. The campaign’s message is clear: “If you believe developers shouldn’t face jail time for their code, please consider donating ETH.” The crypto community has responded positively, with the “Defend Alexey” fundraiser on Juicebox already raising over 15.35 Ethereum, valued at more than $40,000. Additionally, privacy researcher Ameen Soleimani has launched a limited edition NFT collection to help cover Pertsev’s legal expenses.

This campaign builds on previous support from the crypto community. Notably, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has donated over $100,000 to assist Pertsev and Roman Storm, another developer currently detained in the U.S. The case has drawn significant attention from privacy advocates and blockchain experts who are concerned about the precedent it might set if developers are held liable for how their open-source code is used by others.

Daniel Buchner, Head of Decentralized Identity at Block, argues that developers should not face criminal or civil penalties for the misuse of their code by others. “That Alex’s code was primarily used for shitcoins is irrelevant; everyone who cares about justice and human freedom must fight the insane, authoritarian idea that people using open-source software in a way the government doesn’t like makes the developer criminally/civilly liable,” Buchner stated.

The global regulatory landscape has become increasingly hostile toward privacy technologies, with claims that these tools are being used by terrorist groups and rogue states to conceal illegal activities. The U.S. government has taken legal action against several crypto privacy service providers, including the co-founders of Samourai Wallet, for allegedly violating local laws.
