TON Community Stands Strong After Telegram Founder Pavel Durov Arrest in Paris

Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram and TON, was arrested in Paris over concerns regarding illegal activities on Telegram due to inadequate moderation. Despite this, the TON community remains resilient, urging calm and continued development of their decentralized platform.

Pavel Durov, the visionary behind Telegram and the Telegram Open Network (TON), found himself in hot water this weekend when he was arrested at Bourget airport, near Paris. The arrest, which took place on Saturday evening, stems from allegations that Telegram’s lack of moderation has allowed illegal activities to flourish on the platform. Law enforcement believes that the app’s lenient moderation has enabled bad actors to operate unchecked, putting Durov at the center of a growing controversy.

In response to Durov’s arrest, the TON community released a statement reaffirming their commitment to decentralization and freedom of speech. They emphasized that despite the ongoing legal issues, they remain “strong and fully operational” and are focused on their mission to uphold these principles globally. The community encouraged everyone involved in the project to stay calm, united, and to continue building the network despite the challenges.

TON Background and Vision:

TON, or Telegram Open Network, has been a long-term project for Durov and his team at Telegram. Originally conceived in 2017, TON aimed to create a high-performance blockchain that could handle millions of transactions per second, leveraging Telegram’s massive user base of over 930 million monthly users.

In January 2018, Durov announced the launch of Gram, a cryptocurrency that would operate on the TON platform. However, the project quickly ran into legal trouble when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) intervened, arguing that the Gram tokens violated U.S. financial regulations. This legal battle culminated in Telegram withdrawing from the TON project in May 2020 and settling with the SEC the following month.

Despite Telegram’s exit, the TON project didn’t fade into obscurity. Instead, a dedicated group of open-source developers took over, rebranding the project as “NewTON” and continuing to build on the original ideas laid out in the TON whitepaper. Their goal remains to create a scalable, decentralized network capable of supporting a high volume of transactions.

The arrest of Durov has undoubtedly shaken the TON and Telegram communities. However, the TON community’s response has been one of resilience and determination. Their statement reflects a commitment to decentralization and the belief that their mission transcends any individual challenges, even those as significant as Durov’s legal troubles.
