Russia Pledges Uninterrupted Oil Supply to India via “Special Mechanisms” Despite U.S. Tariffs

A Russian diplomat has reaffirmed that oil shipments to India will continue uninterrupted through “very, very special mechanisms,” even as mounting U.S. tariffs and Western sanctions escalate tensions.

During a press briefing in New Delhi, Roman Babushkin, the chargé d’affaires at the Russian Embassy in India, confirmed that Russia is committed to maintaining its oil exports to India through “very, very special mechanisms,” affirming that India’s crude imports from Russia will continue unchanged despite Western pressure. Russia also aims to narrow its trade imbalance with India by expanding energy exports and lowering trade barriers, highlighting the strategic value of their energy ties.

Evgeniy Griva, Russia’s Deputy Trade Representative to India, noted that Russia offers Indian buyers a commercial discount of roughly 5%, making this energy source particularly competitive. He emphasized that India has limited alternatives for such affordable crude, and projected bilateral trade to grow approximately 10% annually.

Strategic cooperation extends beyond trade. Babushkin criticized the U.S. punitive tariffs as unjustified, asserting that stronger India–Russia energy collaboration remains steadfast. Moscow suggested that India’s exports facing difficulties in the U.S. market are welcome in Russia instead. Looking ahead, the diplomatic calendar includes President Putin’s expected year-end visit to New Delhi and a revival of the Russia–India–China trilateral dialogue, signaling deepening regional ties.
