MapleStory Web3 Version Leverages Nostalgia to Capture the Growing Blockchain Gaming Market

MapleStory N, the blockchain-based version of the popular MMORPG, is set to launch outside South Korea. By building on the nostalgia of the original game, Nexpace aims to attract real players to the Web3 gaming scene while addressing past issues with transparent in-game economies.

MapleStory N, the highly anticipated Web3 version of the iconic MMORPG, is positioning itself to stand out in the expanding blockchain gaming market by tapping into the nostalgia of its original fanbase. Developed by Nexpace, the Web3 arm of gaming giant Nexon, MapleStory N is built on the Avalanche blockchain and aims to recreate the magic of the original game, first launched in 2003, while integrating modern blockchain technology.

The original MapleStory captured the hearts of millions worldwide, amassing over 260 million players during its peak. Now, Nexpace CEO Sunyoung Hwang believes that nostalgia will be key to bringing a competitive edge in the Web3 space, which is rife with challenges when it comes to onboarding real users. In an interview with The Block, Hwang explained, “We’re not just targeting current players; we’re reaching out to people who have fond memories of MapleStory.”

Tackling Web2’s “Pay-to-Win” Problem

MapleStory N builds on the successful design of the original game but adds a blockchain layer to foster a more equitable in-game economy. The introduction of NFTs and token-linked game money aims to replicate an open market, removing the “pay-to-win” model that frustrated many players in the past.

In traditional Web2 games, in-game economies were often manipulated to encourage spending, with issues such as loot box mechanics drawing heavy criticism. South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission even ruled that the original MapleStory manipulated probabilities for loot box items. In contrast, MapleStory N plans to offer a more transparent system, with limited NFT game items and rewards available only through gameplay.

The price of these items will be determined by in-game demand, helping to prevent inflation and maintain the stability of the in-game economy. “In [MapleStory N], the entire amount of in-game items and money is limited from the start,” said Hwang. Weekly issuance will ensure the economy remains balanced, regardless of player growth.

Expanding the MapleStory Universe

Nexpace’s vision for MapleStory N extends beyond the game itself. The project is part of a larger ecosystem known as the MapleStory Universe, which includes a decentralized item marketplace and on-chain data tracking for game items. At the heart of this universe is the currency Neso, linked to Nexpace’s ecosystem token NXPC.

Although the company is still fine-tuning its models to address potential challenges, Hwang assured that safety nets are in place to deal with any issues that may arise post-launch. “Of course, everything has side effects,” he said. “We do test out models and try to perfect them, but it’s natural for various problems to arise during live runtime.”

The Future of MapleStory N

MapleStory N is expected to officially launch around the end of 2024 or early 2025. However, due to South Korea’s ban on blockchain-based games, it will be available outside of its home country. The team aims to create a decentralized ecosystem where users can fully immerse themselves in the Web3 experience, with NXPC acting as the utility token.
