Google Mandates FCA Registration for UK Crypto Ads Under New Global Policy

Starting January 15, Google updated policy will require UK crypto advertisers, including exchanges and wallet providers, to register with the FCA and obtain Google certification, enforcing stricter regulations.

Google has announced significant updates to its cryptocurrency advertising policy, introducing stricter regulations for advertisers promoting crypto-related products and services in the United Kingdom. Under the new rules, crypto exchanges and software wallet providers must register with the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) before advertising on Google’s platform.

While FCA registration is mandatory for these services, advertisements for hardware wallets are exempt from the requirement as long as they are strictly used for storing private keys and do not facilitate trading or exchange activities. This nuanced policy aims to ensure compliance without restricting access to essential crypto storage solutions.

Additionally, all advertisers targeting specific markets must obtain Google certification and adhere to the local regulatory framework in their respective regions. The updated policy, effective globally from January 15, reflects Google’s efforts to balance user safety with the growing adoption of cryptocurrency services.

This isn’t Google’s first adjustment to its crypto ad policies. Back in 2018, Google imposed a blanket ban on crypto-related advertisements due to concerns about fraudulent schemes. The policy was relaxed in 2021, allowing ads from regulated crypto exchanges and wallet providers under stringent conditions.

A notable milestone in crypto regulation was achieved in late 2023 when Google expanded its policy to permit advertisements for “Cryptocurrency Coin Trusts,” following the SEC’s approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs for trading. This development underscores a shift in the industry toward mainstream acceptance and increased regulatory oversight.

The new requirements for FCA registration further emphasize the importance of fostering trust and transparency in the crypto advertising space, ensuring that users are protected while maintaining access to legitimate crypto services.
