DWS CEO Predicts “Gigantic Market” for Stablecoins Beyond Crypto Trading

DWS CEO Stefan Hoops sees stablecoins evolving far beyond crypto speculation, foreseeing them as essential tools for institutions to transact in digital securities, bonds, and real estate.

In a forward-looking commentary, Stefan Hoops, CEO of German asset manager DWS, declared that stablecoins have the potential to grow into a “gigantic market.” Speaking after the launch of EURAU—the first euro-denominated stablecoin approved by Germany’s regulator BaFin—Hoops emphasized a broader use case for these digital currencies.

Currently, stablecoins serve primarily as a way to store value on-chain before purchasing crypto. However, Hoops envisions a future where institutional investors can use fiat-backed stablecoins to purchase equities, bonds, real estate, and other tokenized assets easily and efficiently. As he put it, using stablecoins as a medium of exchange could unlock new markets and use cases.

EURAU, developed by AllUnity—a joint venture between DWS, Galaxy Digital, and Flow Traders—is tailored for regulated financial institutions and fintech firms. The stablecoin enables 24/7 cross-border settlement across Europe, aligning with the mandates of the EU’s MiCA regulation. The broad adoption of stablecoins in such contexts signals a future market that could dwarf current crypto-centric use cases.

Hoops encapsulated the sentiment: “If digital currencies were like a human, the human is three years old—it hasn’t even hit adolescence yet.” That early stage, he says, leaves room for exponential growth across new verticals as the ecosystem evolves.
