$307M Stolen in Q3 2025: Security Crisis Raises Alarms Across Blockchain

The third quarter of 2025 was marred by major security breaches, with $306.7 million stolen across crypto platforms, pushing the year’s cumulative losses to $2.55 billion.

Crypto security took center stage this quarter. According to recent reports from European Business Magazine and block analysis firms, Q3 2025 losses from hacks and exploits totaled $306.7 million, lifting year-to-date losses to $2.55 billion. 

Key incidents include:

• $54 million lost from Turkish exchange BtcTurk (exploit method still unknown). 
• $44.2 million stolen from CoinDCX via a security flaw. 
• $42 million drained from GMX in a reentrancy exploit. 
• $41.5 million lost from SwissBorg through a third-party vulnerability. 
• $27 million stolen from BigONE via a supply chain attack. 

A deeper breakdown from security auditor SlowMist reveals that private key leakage is now the top cause of stolen funds—underscoring that user asset protection is more critical than ever. 

While Q3 losses are down from peaks earlier in 2025 (notably the $1.5B ByBit hack in Q1)  , the ongoing pattern of mid-tier hacks emphasizes persistent vulnerabilities in exchanges, protocols, and custodial infrastructure.

Blockchain protocols and platforms must renew focus on rigorous audits, multi-party computation (MPC), hardware security modules (HSMs), and decentralized key custody solutions. Otherwise, even modest triggers can cascade into large losses.
