Toyota ‘Woven City’: A Living Lab for Innovation Opens in 2025

Japanese automotive giant Toyota is set to launch its ambitious Woven City project at the base of Mount Fuji this year. The futuristic settlement, designed as a living laboratory, will initially house 100 residents—mainly Toyota employees and their families—and gradually expand to 2,000 inhabitants in its early phases.

“This year, residents will begin to move in as we slowly bring Woven City to life,” Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda announced during the CES tech show in Las Vegas. He emphasized that the project aims to accelerate innovation by providing a real-world platform for testing new technologies in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, self-driving cars, and smart homes.

A Vision of Sustainable Innovation

The Woven City concept was first unveiled five years ago by Akio Toyoda, with the goal of creating a fully sustainable urban environment. The city will operate as a “living laboratory,” integrating advanced technologies to shape the future of urban living.

Toyota’s Woven CEO Hajime Kumabe expressed optimism about the project’s profitability, countering Toyoda’s earlier remarks suggesting the city might not yield financial returns. “We aim for the Woven City to become profitable, though its impact will likely be measured in how its innovations influence Toyota’s broader operations,” Kumabe stated.

Phase 1 of construction was completed in October 2024, marking a significant milestone in the project. Despite this, the city will not be accessible to the general public for at least two more years.

Technological and Financial Investments

Woven City is part of Toyota’s broader Woven initiatives, which include a groundbreaking software platform and vehicle operating system called Arene. This software aims to streamline car development, reduce costs, and serve as the backbone for Toyota’s next-generation electric vehicles, set for release in 2026.

The project represents a substantial financial investment, though its exact costs remain undisclosed. “It’s a big investment,” said Kenta Kon, Toyota’s Chief Financial Officer, reflecting the company’s commitment to reshaping the future of mobility and urban life.

A Global Responsibility

“Will this Woven City make Toyota any money? Maybe not,” Toyoda acknowledged. “As global citizens, I believe Toyota has a responsibility to invest in our collective future.” This sentiment underscores Toyota’s long-term vision of fostering innovation and sustainability on a global scale.

While Woven City’s financial impact remains uncertain, its role as a testbed for future technologies positions it as a cornerstone of Toyota’s commitment to shaping the future of urban living and mobility.
